Which Way is Up - Finding our Way to the Next Level
In Lech Lecha, this week’s portion of the Bible, the Creator tells Abraham to leave his home. He says, “you’re in a bad place, there are bad people around you, and you’re being influenced by things that are not for your best benefit. You’ve got to get out of here!”
However, God doesn’t tell him where to go.
The reason God tells Abraham to leave – but not where to go - is that every man is internally connected to his next level, and where he is supposed to go in his life. The Light is ever present, but, if the person himself knows that he is stuck or tied to something that he needs to go and be beyond, he himself has to figure out what his next level might be. That’s why the Sages say there is no coercion in spirituality. We can be shown things, but we are each responsible for taking action and forging direction in our lives.
But God is always there, knocking on our door, telling us to go to another level and to become more than we are. The question is – are we listening - or are we staying in a place that is comfortable? Oftentimes “comfortability” messes up our opportunity to get somewhere and be somebody.
The question arises, if the Creator can’t tell us where to go, then how can we know what our next level is?
The answer is, when we know that we can do something, or take on a new project, or do something more than we do now, we want to go for it. And when difficult doors open for us – we know these are the ones we’re meant to walk through.
